Floral Bridal Shower Cake

This cake was made for a bridal shower with a tropical theme. If you know how to make the flowers, it is very easy to put together.  Don't know how to  make gumpaste flowers?  No problem.  You can now purchase them from my handmade shop.

To make this cake you will need...

1 sheet cake sized cake board
1 sheet cake
white and green buttercream icing
pink, green, orchid, yellow and purple gumpaste
pink piping gel
tips #2, #3, #85 and #35

Directions:

Step 1

A few days in advance, make the gumpaste flowers. Except for the fantasy flowers, everything you need to know and make the flowers, including the cutters, can be found in the Wilton Floral Collection Flower Making Kit below. Click this link for instructions on how to make the fantasy flower.

You will need to make 2 large fantasy flowers, 6 orchids, 6 lilies, 8 small pink daisies, 4 white daisies, 6 purple cherry blossoms, 6 yellow cherry blossoms, 6-8 large leaves, and 8-10 small leaves.

***Decorator's Tip*** It is always a good idea to make extra gumpaste items.

Step 2

Level, tort and fill your cake on the cake board. You are then ready to ice the cake. With this cake, the top was iced smooth with white buttercream icing. The sides were vertically piped using tip #85 and white buttercream icing, just like in the picture below.

Piped Side Example

Then, using tip #35 and white buttercream icing, pipe the boarder around the top edge of the cake. A shell boarder would work great.

Step 3

You are now ready to place your flowers on the cake. To get height on the group of flowers, pipe a large mound of white buttercream icing where you want your flowers to go. Once you are happy with the placement of your flowers, fill in the gaps with your large leaves. If needed, you can use a few of your small leaves as well.

Step 4

Using green buttercream icing and tip #3, pipe a vine as I have in the pictured cake. You should have 4 wavy vines when you are complete. Where it looks natural, I have piped small extensions of the vine.

Step 5

Place your smaller flowers along the vine and add a leaf here and there.

Step 6

Mix pink icing coloring in some piping gel and place the gel in a piping bag with tip #2. Pipe your message.

***Decorator's Tip*** Piping gel is very runny, especially after you mix color into it. To firm it up, place it in the freezer for a few minutes.
